Visit Fort Mandan's authentically reconstructed fort where Lewis and Clark
wintered in 1804 - 1805 and where they first met Sakakawea.
For five wild months in the winter of 1804-1805, the
Lewis & Clark Expedition lived at Fort Mandan, their outpost and safe haven
on the edge of the unknown frontier. It was here where they first met Sakakawea,
became close friends with the Mandan and Hidatsa Indians, and braved through a
long, bitterly cold winter. Authentically reconstructed, the front gates to Fort
Mandan proudly stand open once again, all year long. Next to Fort Mandan is our
Visitor Services Center which is home to the Cottonwoods gift shop, library and
classroom. Just 2 miles from the Fort is the Interpretive Center, a multimillion
dollar historical treasure trove filled with rare artifacts, engaging displays
and interactive wonders. Open all year round, the Center wonderfully documents
the legendary journey of Lewis and Clark unlike any other endeavor. It also
houses the acclaimed Berquist Gallery, which features a complete and extremely
rare collection of Karl Bodmer's historic artwork.
